Molotov Man

by Susan Meiselas

This photography was taken in 1979 by Susan Meiselas in Nicaragua. In that time, Nicaragua was struggling with the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle and the Nicaraguans resisted and made a revolution, the Nicaraguan Revolution. The leftist Sandinista resistance fought to defeat the dictator.

This photography captures Pablo Barauz, a member of the leftist Sandinista resistance during this revolution, in the act of throwing a bomb made with a Pepsi bottle. He was going to throw it at the headquarters of the National Guard. On the left hand, he’s holding a gun and, in his face, we can see how much he has been fighting to protect his home, Nicaragua. He has an angry and also powerful expression, he must have been in a lot of pain. In the background, on the right side, we see other members of the Sandinista resistance protecting themselves with barriers of sand sacks and watching how Barauz it’s going to throw the bomb, they might be very afraid for what could happen.

This captured moment is a symbol of the revolution and the strength of the revolt. People have the power to change things. We can change it! As soon as we unite, we have the authority to decide what’s better for our country and we must fight for what’s equal and fair for every race, religion, and people.
